Hello Friends!
Both housing bills supported by Denver DSA have reached the Senate!
HB23-1115 would end the statewide prohibition on rent control, allowing cities to enact rent control and stop the rent gouging of working-class Coloradans. Equally important is HB23-1171 - Just Cause Requirement for Eviction of Residential Tenant, which prohibits a landlord from evicting a residential tenant unless the landlord has just cause for eviction.
Over the past two months, we have testified in house committee hearings, mobilized for press conferences and a rent control rally, and contacted our senators to advance our vision for just housing in Colorado.
Denver DSA members showed up to the Capitol earlier this month to a press conference for Just Cause eviction protections.
So far, these efforts have paid off! Repeal of the rent control ban has gone further than ever before, passing the House 40-24-1! Despite concentrated landlord opposition, Just Cause recently passed 38-26-1. Thanks to everyone who has taken action so far!
However, the Senate will be a tougher climb – landlords are organizing through the Apartment Association to preserve their power and their profits. We need your support today to take back power for working class tenants. There are multiple ways to take action:
Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or want to learn more about plugging into the work!
