Hey everyone. Gavin Newson here. Just wrapped up our first Red State Tour for the Campaign for Democracy and I wanted to share some updates.
I hope you’ll give ‘em a look.
Alabama
I met with the Democratic Caucus while in Montgomery. They shared with me how important our mission at Campaign for Democracy really is. In 2010, they held the majority. Now, they are stuck building from the bottom up and need our help.
[Gavin Newsom's tweet reading 'While the media circus focuses on the politics of hate and division today, it’s never been more important to organize from the bottom up. States like Alabama that were ground zero for the fight for civil rights are experiencing a massive roll back of freedoms led by the @GOP.' Link: [link removed]
Mississippi
I spent the day with Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba, Ebony, and their beautiful children attending Palm Sunday service at College Hill Baptist Church.
Later, we took our families to the Civil Rights Museum in Jackson to see their powerful exhibit on Emmett Till. His tragic story sparked anger and fear — and a powerful movement. It was a stark reminder of our nation’s history and how important it is that we teach our kids about it.

Arkansas
In Arkansas, we took the family to Little Rock’s Central High School where today students are carrying on the legacy of the Little Rock Nine who bravely desegregated schools in Arkansas.

My message to them: you don’t have to have a position of formal authority to use moral authority & make change' Link: [link removed]
We also met with the Arkansas Democrats who are fighting to stop the rollback of rights by their new Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
[Emerge Arkansas's tweet reading 'Thank you @GavinNewsom & @JenSiebelNewsom for spending time in Arkansas tonight. We loved having you. Thank you for reminding us that we have agency to determine our own path. We will change the face of politics across this state and ensure every Arkansan can thrive. #arpx' Link: [link removed]
Florida
Yesterday morning, I visited with staff and teachers from New College in Florida; a school Ron DeSantis is attempting to transform from a public honors college into a Christian conservative school, much to the near universal dismay of everyone who learns and works there.
I told them they are not alone. That they matter. And that people everywhere are watching authoritarian leaders like Ron DeSantis roll back rights, limit speech and take away freedoms.
Like I said, we are going to travel the country and take the fight directly to extremist Republicans systematically attacking the very foundations of our free society. We will bring attention to their efforts.
It’s working:
[A collage of headlines highlighting Gavin Newsom's trip to Florida.]
Republicans like Ron DeSantis are fanning the flames of culture wars in places like New College to distract from the fact that Florida has higher murder rates, worse education and worse health care outcomes than states like California.
Thank you for being a part of this fight with me.

👉🏻 Hi. Please don’t click away just yet. 🇺🇸
All across the country, rights are being rolled-back in real-time by Republicans with a zest for demonization. We are going to go on the road and on offense — in red states too — and take the fight to statehouses, local communities, and electoral battlegrounds to save our democracy.
If it sounds worth it that Democrats fight back everywhere rights are under attack – even in Red States – we are asking you to contribute to Gavin Newsom’s Campaign for Democracy today. It all adds up when we’re all chipping in.
