On Tuesday, April 4, the Committee of the Whole voted unanimously to approve the markup of the “Cassandra S. Pinkney Way Designation Act of 2023,” which would symbolically designate the portion of 10th Place, S.E. in Squares 5933, 5934, 5938, and 5939 between Mississippi Avenue, S.E. and Savannah Street, S.E. as “Cassandra S. Pinkney Way”. Ms. Pinkney was the founder and Executive Director of Eagle Academy and an integral part of so many families' lives in the District until her passing on September 30, 2016. This legislation, along with the Davon T. McNeal, III Way Designation Act of 2023, were both approved on the first vote at the legislative meeting.
Councilmember White is thrilled that two pieces of legislation, the Marion Barry Avenue Designation Act of 2023 and the Dedication of a Portion of W Street, SE, S.O. 16-24322 Act of 2023 affecting roads and pedestrian walkways in Ward 8, passed unanimously on the final vote at the Council. Councilmember White is grateful for so much community discussion and support in renaming Good Hope Rd., SE to Marion Barry Ave., SE. and will be tracking closely as the bill moves to the Mayor next for approval.
At Tuesday’s legislative meeting, four resolutions introduced by Councilmember White were all passed unanimously into law: the Ward 8 Woods Conservancy Recognition Resolution of 2023, the Marvin Gaye Day Recognition Resolution of 2023, the Bard High School Early College DC DCIAA and DCSAA Basketball Championship Ceremonial Recognition Resolution of 2023, and the Patrice 'Boog' Harris Ceremonial Recognition Resolution of 2023, alongside a number of additional measures that Councilmember White co-introduced.
