Indivisibles,
It’s been one month since we announced our Unrepresentatives campaign to
resist the MAGA agenda in Congress and flip the House in 2024. There’s
been so much energy behind this campaign and a lot of new activists have
signed up to get involved already -- so even though we’re still in the
early stages, we thought we’d provide a brief update (and yes, renew our
call for support!).
On the ground, Indivisible groups in our 18 target districts --
Republican-held moderate districts where Biden won in 2020 -- have been
holding strategy meetings, and some have had early successes:
🗽 In New York, [ [link removed] ]Indivisibles protested outside a major fundraiser for
[ [link removed] ]Rep. Mike Lawler, pressuring him to clarify his position on the MAGA
default crisis and GOP threats to cut Medicare and Social Security. The
protest put enough negative attention on Lawler that he had to release a
statement saying he’d refuse to vote for cuts to those crucial programs.
🔔 In Pennsylvania, Indivisible Bucks County kicked off the
Unrepresentatives campaign by [ [link removed] ]hosting a rally outside of [ [link removed] ]Rep. Brian
Fitzpatrick’s office. After years of him refusing to host an in-person
town hall, they wanted to send a message that Fitzpatrick can’t truly
represent his constituents if he’s not even willing to meet with them
(true to form, Fitzpatrick's staff refused to meet them. Instead someone
called the police on the festive activists).
And a lot more is coming. Just last week, we had our first call ☎️ with
activists and group members from across the 18 districts to plan more
actions we can take to hold these Unrepresentatives accountable and
discuss the support Indivisible will be providing (with your help)
including 📈 trainings, 📺 ads, 🪧 billboards, 💸 funding, and so much more.
Even though we’re really just getting this campaign off the ground, our
work has already gotten significant press 📰. [ [link removed] ]Rachel Maddow had our own
Ezra Levin on to discuss the campaign (calling it “some of the most
practical, strategically interesting organizing in the country”), and
[ [link removed] ]The Guardian dedicated a major feature to the work. If you need a
refresher on the campaign strategy, we definitely recommend giving this
piece a read.
The Unrepresentatives themselves are taking notice too! Ahead of the
protest at his office, Rep. [ [link removed] ]Brian Fitzpatrick lashed out against the
local Indivisible group in an unhinged statement 🤬 to local press. Staying
true to our strategy, local organizers used that as an opportunity to
point the spotlight on how hostile he is to constituents and how out of
touch he is with their values: The exact point the protesters set out to
make!
As The Guardian piece makes clear, this is a long-term fight that will
require us to activate quickly around strategic moments. We’ll do what we
can to pressure these Unrepresentatives to distance themselves from MAGA
colleagues when possible (the Lawler statement above is a great example of
such a win). But when they betray their constituents and support extreme
MAGA policies, we need to shine a spotlight on their extremism, show their
constituents they aren’t the moderates they claim to be, and repeat until
voters give them the boot. 🥾
This work wouldn’t be possible without the support of our grassroots
donors. [ [link removed] ]Please consider becoming a monthly donor to help us continue
building this program. Your sustained contribution will ensure we can give
our groups the resources they need to make this campaign successful across
all 18 districts.
Together, we will resist the harmful agenda coming from the Republican
House, ensure that the 18 Unrepresentatives are held accountable for their
extremism, and ultimately rebuild our trifecta in 2024.
In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
