Dear John,
I am excited to be launching season two of How To Save A Country after a terrific, wide-ranging first season alongside my co-host Michael Tomasky, of The New Republic.
Episode one of season two drops today with guest Maurice Mitchell, national director of the Working Families Party. You may know Maurice from his important piece, “Building Resilient Organizations,” which spread like wildfire in the progressive movement and describes ways the left can be more strategic and fight the most important battles. Maurice is a strategist who sees how our ideas might become reality, even in divided times.
Our conversation with Maurice really sets the tone for this season.
The first season introduced you to some extraordinary people with big, bold, progressive ideas. The second season will show you those ideas in action, and where they’re bumping up against political realities.
Check out season two now.
One thing that stuck with me from talking to Maurice is the importance of persuasion in the progressive movement.
“I think the left is much too preoccupied with ensuring that we are both morally correct and factually right. We need to be out there, and we need to be engaging people who don't agree with us every single day,” he says.
It hearkens back to last season’s conversation with Hakeem Jeffries, now minority leader of the House of Representatives. He talked about the importance of messaging—messaging to win. A big part of the art of messaging is persuasion, and bringing more people along to our ideas. That is our goal this season, and I hope you join us on this journey, both by listening to the podcast and with your work in the real world.
Listen now to our interview with Maurice Mitchell.
