We took the opportunity to speak with some of the participants of Free Speech is for Me, our new training and mentoring programme to equip a new generation of advocates to challenge censorship, defend speech rights and champion freedom of expression for other activists.

** “It taught me that it’s not just about words on a page”

“I have a voice and it matters and I should use it,” said former Index on Censorship editorial assistant Lewis Jennings, talking about the most important thing he learned during his time at Index.
Jennings, who is now the assistant editor at Liverpool-based newspaper The Scottie Press, and a freelance radio producer at two radio stations in the UK’s north-west, was the fourth Tim Hetherington fellow. He started at Index in September 2018.
The Tim Hetherington Fellowship ([link removed]) is a partnership with Liverpool John Moores University, the Tim Hetherington Trust and Index on Censorship. The fellows complete a year-long position with our editorial team.

** International Women’s Day special event: experiments in fiction

Index on Censorship and Foyles are delighted to team up once more on to present an evening with acclaimed writers Irenosen Okojie and Meena Kandasamy exploring literary censorship and the necessity of artistic expression ahead of International Women’s Day. ** VAULT Festival to explore freedom of expression
------------------------------------------------------------
Jo Sutherland’s dystopian debut play V+15 imagines a world in which books are banned and dissent is brutally suppressed. When whistle-blower, Alina, tries to convince journalist, Vincent, to play a part in sabotaging the system, the pair are forced to confront the ways in which they are guilty of manipulating language for their own gain. V+15 explores the cost of speaking up against injustice and the weaponisation of words by the powerful.
