Hi John,
Tomorrow the two week countdown begins to The Big One! To get you up to speed on the details, we’ll be sending all the key info in five emails over the next five days. These will cover many aspects of the action, including ways to volunteer or support from home.
The Big One - the basics
This is a four day action from the 21st to the 24th April 2023, where people from all groups and movements, not just XR, will gather at the Houses of Parliament.
We are demanding that the Government faces the reality of the climate crisis. We need to bring an end to the fossil fuel era, starting with an end to new licences and funding.
Politicians can no longer be trusted to make decisions for us. We need citizens’ assemblies filled with ordinary people that can guide the Government to fair, long-term solutions.
Although originally conceived by XR, it’s become much bigger than any one group. More than 100 organisations are supporting The Big One including Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, Patagonia, Tearfund and PCS Union.
Learn, create, connect. There will be art and music, talks by experts, opportunities to meet and connect with others, and activities for the kids. Bring beautiful, creative placards, flags, and banners!
Come when you like, stay if you can. We’ll be there for four days, with a different set of activities each day (more on that in tomorrow’s email). Any time you can give will be enough.
Come on your own or with a group. Mobilise your friends and family, plan a trip with a group - or connect with your local XR group or XR Community group. You can always ask a steward to show you around and help you find like minded people.
Not sure you’ll make a difference? The Government will continue to ignore the climate crisis if it possibly can. The only thing that will change that is us. Only by coming out in our masses will we show that our concern, fear - and our hope - is widely held across UK society. There is no shortcut. Show up and be counted.
We can make this the biggest climate action ever held in the UK - something that is talked about for generations. We can bring about change. But first, we need to turn up.
Love and rage,
Extinction Rebellion UK
PS. If you’re planning on attending, say so! This helps us plan and means you are counted in the number who’ve signed up, which will give other people confidence to attend too.
