Highlighted Successes for March

Outreach has been working with a client advocate to distribute feminine hygiene products to females at the Sullivan Arena.

Outreach provided clients with more food items than in previous months, thanks to a partnership with the Food Bank of Alaska. This has been a wonderful resource for our neighbors experiencing unsheltered homelessness.

** National Alliance to End Homelessness Webinar
Implementing a Complex Care Shelter: Opportunities and Lessons Learned

"When COVID-19 forced homeless shelters to reduce capacity, Anchorage providers developed a complex care shelter that was designed for people with serious, chronic conditions and mobility issues. The experience confirmed that smaller, specialized shelters and facilities are the best solution for Anchorage’s homeless response system." - National Alliance to End Homelessness

This webinar will share the journey of implementing a complex care shelter. Panelists include:

Local Housing & Homelessness Highlights
Remote Area Medical - RAM


** Free Clinic
------------------------------------------------------------

The patient parking lot will open no later than 11:59 p.m. (midnight local time) on Friday night, April 14, and remain open. As patients arrive at the parking lot, they will be provided with additional information regarding clinic opening processes and next steps. Clinic doors typically open at 6 a.m. This clinic is in collaboration with Mountainview Lions Club Foundation.

Patients should be prepared with their own food, water, medicines, and clothing when arriving early. Bathrooms will be provided.

Free dental, vision, and medical services are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to time constraints, be prepared to choose between DENTAL and VISION services. Medical services are offered to every patient attending the clinic.

All services are free and open to the public. No ID required.

** Sleep Out Kincaid Park
One Night, One Purpose

An increasing number of young people are facing homelessness. You can help by giving up your bed for a night to sleep out at Kincaid Park to raise funds to ensure that youth experiencing homelessness can sleep safely at Covenant House Alaska.

This family-friendly Sleep Out fundraiser begins on Friday at 6 PM and will end on Saturday at 8 AM. If you opt not to stay the night, you can still join for an evening programming of music and activities.

Community Solutions


** Reason for hope

Over the last year, two stories about homelessness have been unfolding. The first has dominated the discourse: homelessness is a crisis. That story is true, and so is another:
Communities across the country are making progress on solving homelessness.

Community Solutions published a report that includes findings from evaluation partners ORS and Equal Measure, on year one of their five-year journey with the MacArthur Foundation’s 100&Change award.

** Housing First Virtual Event
------------------------------------------------------------

On April 6, 2023, from 11am - 1pm PT HUD’s Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R) will host a virtual PD&R Quarterly Update on Housing First, a service model that addresses homelessness by quickly getting individuals and households experiencing homelessness into housing without any preconditions or barriers.

After a housing market update from PD&R’s Kevin Kane and a data spotlight segment from PD&R’s Veronica Helms Garrison, Jeff Olivet from the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness will provide remarks.

The event will then feature two panel discussions. The first panel will highlight Housing First activities in Richmond, New Orleans, Houston, and Mississippi, and the second panel will do a deeper dive into the work being done in Seattle, Washington moderated by HUD Northwest Regional Administrator Margaret Salazar.

National Council of Nonprofits


** Preparing for the End of Pandemic Emergency Declarations
------------------------------------------------------------

The end of the national and public health emergency declarations are still more than a month away – on May 11 – but the impacts on individuals and the nonprofits serving them are becoming clearer. Supplemental food supports ended in February, causing a spike in the number of people turning to food banks, houses of worship, and other charitable organizations to meet their needs. This past weekend, expanded Medicaid eligibility ended in five states, which will be followed by 34 more states by June. [Read more] ([link removed])

Why It Matters: Food banks, houses of worship, and other charitable nonprofits can anticipate a significant increase in the number of individuals and families who turn to them for relief when they lose food, housing, and health care supports.

** Homelessness and Housing First
Reps. Jayapal and Meng Reintroduce Housing is a Human Right Act
------------------------------------------------------------

Representatives Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and Grace Meng (D-NY) reintroduced the “Housing is a Human Right Act” (H.R.1708 ([link removed]) ) on March 22. If enacted, the NLIHC-endorsed bill would invest more than $300 billion in essential affordable and accessible housing infrastructure, including $200 billion for affordable housing and support services, $27 billion annually for homelessness services, and $100 million annually for community-driven alternatives to criminalization of people experiencing homelessness. The bill would also make targeted investments in communities whose members experience a disproportionate risk of homelessness.
