John, yesterday was a reminder of just how much state elections and legislatures can matter for people's fundamental rights.

In Wisconsin, progressive Judge Janet Protasiewicz flipped control of the State Supreme Court — giving folks there a real chance to overturn the state's criminal ban on abortion (one written in the 19th century).

But in North Carolina, after a state legislator switched parties, Republicans officially secured a super-majority that can overcome the Democratic governor's veto. They are almost certain to flex their new power by passing an abortion ban.

Sometimes, all it takes is one election — one seat — to determine whether something as essential as reproductive freedom is recognized by a state government. This is the reality we live in after the Dobbs ruling.

And with that reality, we must fight as hard as we can for every race. Virginians will be electing their next State Senate in November, and if the GOP takes control of the chamber, they will send abortion bans to Glenn Youngkin's desk.
