The New York Times called this race “the year’s biggest election” – and for good reason.
For years, Republicans used tactics like gerrymandering and voter suppression to hold onto unearned power in Wisconsin. Experts went so far as to label the state a “democracy desert,” because the GOP had made it nearly impossible for Democrats to win a majority in the state legislature, even when they earned more votes statewide.
But last night, Wisconsin voters elected Judge Janet Protasiewicz by double digits, making it clear that they’ve had enough of these anti-democratic power grabs.
“Despite the fact that, for more than a decade, Wisconsin Republicans have put in place multiple structural barriers to fair representation, including a gerrymandered legislature, voter suppression laws, and a conservative court majority that was wildly out of step with the public, the people did not give up – instead they stayed engaged.
And that is an important lesson for how democracy can ultimately win in this ever enduring fight.”

Still, the Wisconsin GOP is not going down easy. Before the election results were even officially certified, Republicans already began floating the idea of impeaching Judge Protasiewicz!
