AMP condemns the Israeli Occupation Forces violent assault on worshippers during the month of Ramadan

American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) condemns the Israeli occupation’s violent assault on the Al-Aqsa Mosque during the holy month of Ramadan, injuring hundreds of peaceful Palestinians while observing prayer. Following yesterday's attacks, displacements, and arrests, Israeli occupation forces are actively attacking hundreds of Palestinian worshippers. Just less than 24 hours ago, startling footage revealed Israeli occupation personnel striking Palestinians with batons and their assault rifles within the holy site and it’s starting again. Eyewitness reports state that Israeli forces broke doors and windows to gain entry into the mosque, and deployed stun grenades and rubber bullets once inside. Such acts of violence and aggression violate international human rights law, and their occurrence during the holy month of Ramadan against worshippers is especially egregious.

These actions blatantly ignore the Biden administration’s appeals to honor the status quo arrangement that Israel is a party to, which stipulates that only Muslims have the right to pray in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and have the right to do so free of Israel’s interference. Under this arrangement, the day-to-day administration and religious affairs of the site are managed by the Islamic Waqf, a Jordanian-funded religious trust. Israeli interference in the religious affairs or administration of the site, especially unprovoked attacks on Palestinians is a direct violation of the status quo arrangement. 

Last month, AMP sent a policy memo to the State Department that provided them with policy recommendations ranging from reinforcing the status quo arrangement in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound to ensuring that U.S. funding isn't used for acts of religious repression or incitement to violence.

AMP Condemns Israel’s repeated storming and violent occupation of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and calls on the Biden Administration to investigate whether American weapons were used in the assault. We further call on the Biden administration to bring an end to the impunity Israel enjoys in its crimes and violations of international laws due to continuous and unlimited American support with a grave lack of accountability.
