We’re writing to you today with a quick assignment.
It won’t take more than a few minutes, and it could have a BIG impact on helping us reach our goal of 100 signers on the Patients Over Profits Pledge.
Step 1: Look up the names of your local city and state level elected officials. This could include your city council member, mayor, state house and senate members, and more.
Step 2: Use your best Google skills to find an email address for each of them, a contact form, or if all else fails — send them a direct message on Facebook or Twitter.
Step 3: Send them this email below asking them to sign the Patients Over Profits pledge. Make sure to edit the email to insert your information and their name.
Dear [Elected Official],
I am writing to urge you to sign the Patients Over Profits pledge, as introduced by National Nurses United and other health care advocacy organizations. This pledge states that a candidate or elected official will not take contributions over $200 from executives, lobbyists, and PACs affiliated with the hospital, insurance, and pharma corporations and instead pledge to put the health, well-being, and safety of their constituents over corporate health industry profits.
We have a dysfunctional, wasteful, and cruel health care system. We spend more per capita on health care than any other nation with universal health care, and we often have only worse health outcomes as a result. 29 million people in this country are without health insurance. At least 47 million more are underinsured — they have insurance that they can’t afford to use due to astronomical co-pays, deductibles, and premiums.
I strongly oppose the overwhelming influence of insurance and pharmaceutical industry corporate PACs, executives, and lobbyists on our political system, and I hope that all politicians, yourself included, will commit to standing with patients and communities, not corporate health care profiteers.
Please take the Patients Over Profits pledge by visiting: https://patientsoverprofits.org/.
Thank you for your time, and please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss this issue further.
Sincerely,
Your NameStep 4: You’re all done! If you want extra credit, you can go back and repeat the process with another elected official!
We know this plan works. When city and state officials hear directly from their constituents, it matters!
So far we have 86 elected officials and candidates signed on to the pledge to reject money from the corporate health care industry. Just this week, we celebrated two new signers from Florida:
Gaining signers like these from the South, where so many large for-profit health care corporations are headquartered, sends a powerful message. But we still have a bit more to go to reach our 100-signer goal by May 1, so please help us reach this goal by sending an email to your state and local elected officials today.
Every new pledge signer is one less opportunity for the corporate health care industry to corrupt our politics and buy-off votes.
With determination,
Nurses’ Campaign to Win Medicare for All
