Five of the progressive heroes PCCC members have been keeping an eye on
since they entered Congress 2022 have introduced their first bills.

They’re taking on gun violence and harmful immigration policies, standing
up to predatory for-profit colleges, defending human rights, and working
to preserve the environment for future generations. This means special
interest groups and Republican billionaires will be champing at the bit to
defeat these progressives in 2024.

and make sure they have the resources they need to fend off attacks by
donating early to their 2024 reelection campaigns!

legislation just one week before the tragic school shooting in Nashville.
His bill would establish the first federal Office for Gun Violence
Prevention. As Maxwell explained on ABC news, "gun violence is one of the
least researched causes of death in the United States… This office would
help aggregate the research, aggregate the data, and provide
recommendations to Congress and municipal governments across the country
on how we can curb gun violence." Maxwell, the first Gen Z member of
Congress, got his start as the organizing director at March for Our Lives
after the Parkland shooting in his home state of Florida.

Greg Casar (TX-35) is a lead co-sponsor on a landmark bill introduced last
week that would end the mandatory detention of migrants arriving at the US
border. As Greg said, "Caging millions of immigrant families has always
been wrong, and it doesn’t even help resolve the humanitarian crisis at
our border. Trump demonstrated that very clearly." Greg is the
unanimously-elected Congressional Progressive Caucus whip. He has deep
roots in the labor movement and is the son of Mexican immigrants.

Delia Ramirez (IL-03) put forth a bill that would restore GI Bill benefits
to veterans defrauded by predatory for-profit colleges. In a speech to
Congress, Delia said: "If a school commits an act of fraud, there is no
across-the-board-mechanism in place for student veterans to restore their
GI Bill benefits. But we can change that." Delia is the first Latina
elected to Congress from the Midwest and a passionate advocate for
economic justice.

Robert Garcia (CA-42) is working to establish a Special Envoy for the
Human Rights of LGBTQ+ people to make sure the US is fully committed to
standing in solidarity with the global LGBTIQ+ community. He is the first
openly LGBTQ+ foreign-born member of Congress.

Becca Balint (VT-AL) joined Senators Bernie Sanders and Peter Welch in
introducing a bill to preserve Vermont’s clean waterways for future
generations. Her legislation has the backing of environmental groups, like
the Vermont River Conservancy, and the Abenaki Nation. She’s the first
woman and first openly LGBTQ+ person elected to Congress from Vermont, and
pledged to tackle the climate crisis on the campaign trail.

Cheers to Maxwell, Greg, Delia, Robert, and Becca on their inaugural
legislation!
