Friend,

Last week, Elissa introduced three gun violence prevention bills. She did it while standing alongside two student survivors of the Michigan State University and Oxford High School shootings.

One bill was taken directly from the shooting at Michigan State on February 13th: This bill would bar the sale of a gun for three years to someone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor if they used, carried or possessed a gun during the crime. The shooter at MSU had been convicted of a gun-related offense in 2019, plead it down to a misdemeanor, and therefore could buy a gun as soon as his 18 month probation was over.

The second bill would require a one-week waiting period before a buyer can take their gun home. This would help cut down on crimes carried out in the heat of the moment, such as the mass shooting in Atlanta, not to mention cut down on suicides and threats between domestic partners.

And the third bill, reintroduced with Senator Ed Markey, would appropriate funds for gun violence prevention research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the next five years. Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children under 21, and of the 30 top causes of death for Americans, it’s the least-studied. (Sepsis is studied more than gun violence at the CDC.)

Republicans in Congress have done nothing as tragedy after tragedy has taken place in communities across this country. They keep their head down until the news media turns to something else. This is despite the fact that in Michigan, 88% of Michiganders favor background checks, 80% support penalties for unsafe storage of firearms, and 75% support red flag laws.

Elissa says she can feel the ground shifting on the issue of gun safety, but it’s elected Republicans who seem to be the last ones to get the memo. The question now is will Republicans have the courage to act?

And that’s exactly the question Elissa asked when she gave an interview on Chris Hayes last week calling on her Republican colleagues to act. Take a moment to watch for yourself and chip in a few bucks if you can to help send Elissa to the Senate:
