Hi John,
Extremists on the far right are wasting no time in their attempt to weaponize the tragedy in Nashville to advance their hateful, anti-trans agenda. The attacks following this tragedy are not an isolated incident, but a symptom of the systemic transphobia that is fueled by the GOP's relentless attacks on trans rights, dignity, and survival.
In numbers:
-
13: The number of states that have banned youth gender-affirming care this year.
-
492: The number of anti-trans bills that have been introduced or passed in state legislatures across the country.
-
47: The number of states that have introduced anti-trans legislation.
But this email isn't about numbers, it's about people – trans people, whose lives are under threat by these coordinated, hateful attacks.
In Nebraska, RFS alum
Sen. Megan Hunt — who is a mother to a trans son — pledged to filibuster every bill for the rest of the legislative session after the Nebraska Legislature advanced a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for those under 19.
In Colorado, RFS alum and the state's first transgender representative
Rep. Brianna Titone fought back hateful vitriol after a Republican colleague made transphobic remarks, saying, "Whether you like it or not I'm your colleague. Whether you believe me or people like me should exist, I do exist."
And in Oklahoma, RFS alum and the first nonbinary state lawmaker in the country,
Rep. Mauree Turner, is fighting a wave of hate mail after their censure following a protest against a trans health care ban under debate. The trans health care ban is making its way through the state legislature, and doctors who specialize in care for trans youth are now leaving the state to avoid potential criminal prosecution. Trans kids whose health and well-being depend on these doctors have nowhere to turn.
These stories are exactly why we want to give you another number:
50 — the number of states we're working in to elect pro-trans rights, pro-LGBTQIA+, diverse young progressives to resist these outrageous, vile policies and save lives.
Because trans lives matter as much in Nebraska, Colorado, and Oklahoma as they do in New York or Oregon. Trans lives MATTER.
