Chag Pesach Sameach!
Dear Friends,
Tomorrow at sunset on the 15th of Nisan, Jews throughout the world
will gather with families and friends to celebrate their Passover Seders,
to retell the story of the Jews’ Exodus from Egypt. Passover celebrates
Freedom: the liberation of the Jews from slavery in Egypt, their forty-
year journey in the desert that led them from enslavement to become a
unified People, a Nation in the Land of Israel.
During the Passover Seder, it is customary for the youngest child to ask four questions, which begin with: “Manishtana halaila hazeh mekol
halailot? Why is this night different from all other nights?” In order to
fully answer, we explain the story of the Exodus, for Moses said, “And
thou shalt tell thy son in that day saying it is because of that which the Lord did for me when I came forth out of Egypt.”
The importance of telling our children our history applies to our
American story as well. Ronald Reagan said: “Freedom is never more
than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our
children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and
handed on for them to do the same or one day we will spend our
sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was
once like in America where men were free.”
Teaching our children Freedom’s stories is essential and one of the
main reasons for the Seder. Our children represent the future of
freedom for all, and they must know their heritage in order for freedom
to flourish. Therefore, while we tell the story of the miracle of Passover
to our children on this night, it is also important to continually tell them
of the miracle of the American Founding, our Founding Fathers and the
exceptional nature of the United States of America.
On this Passover 2023/5783, we pray for Peace in Jerusalem and
throughout the world and wish everyone a Chag Pesach Sameach, a
Happy and Joyous Passover!
