John, did you know that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is one of the major proponents of the secretive Article V plot to gut our Constitution?
That’s right. The very same man who is:
- Using election police and confusing anti-voter laws to intimidate voters,
- Pushing anti-journalism and anti-protest laws to shut down all criticism,
- And attempting to ban programs on diversity, equity, and inclusion in colleges.
Governor Ron DeSantis is the picture of extremism. And if just six more states call for Article V, his vision for Florida could become the reality for the entire U.S.
John, I have to be honest, I’m worried about our future if an Article V Convention to rewrite our Constitution is called.
Article V would give corporations, wealthy special interests, and extremists like Governor DeSantis and his cronies free rein to rewrite our Constitution however they see fit. Nothing is off limits – not our right to vote, not our right to privacy, and not even First Amendment rights to free speech.
Many constitutional experts believe Article V to be the least known and greatest present threat to our democracy.
But I’m not writing you today to paint a doom and gloom picture of our future. I’m writing to let you know that I know what it takes to stop Article V. Here at Common Cause, I’m leading a multi-part strategy to bring the Article V plot out of the shadows and into the public eye, while simultaneously working to block every new call for Article V that pops up.
One of Article V’s greatest weapons is its secrecy. Those behind this plot are working to keep it under wraps so they can steal our rights under the cover of darkness – before we know what’s going on and can mobilize to stop them.
So, I’m shining a light on Article V. I’m alerting members like you to bills moving through state legislatures, putting a spotlight on Article V’s backers, and debunking myths created to make Article V seem benign.
Meanwhile I’m leading the state-by-state grassroots organizing response only Common Cause can deliver to block every new Article V bill that pops up in the states while working to rescind any bills that have already been passed.
And this strategy is working, John. Already this year, Common Cause members like you mobilized to stop a new Article V call in Montana by just one vote. And before that, we rescinded calls in New Jersey, Illinois, Colorado, New Hampshire, Delaware, New Mexico, Maryland, and Nevada.
But we desperately need to ramp up our work. One of the major groups pushing for Article V confirmed that they’ll be putting even more resources into passing Article V bills in response to our hard-fought wins. We can’t keep up our work without you.
