Biden's asylum ban faces strong opposition

NIJC joined a wide range of organizations and 33,000 people in submitting public comments to the Biden administration opposing its proposed asylum ban. Thank you to everyone who joined the effort!

To protect the rights and freedom of our immigrant community members, we are working on litigation with partners to fight against the resurrection of the asylum ban.

NIJC mourns lives lost in Mexico detention center fire

Our hearts go out to the victims and the families of the 38 people who lost their lives or suffered injury and trauma in the recent fire at the immigration center in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Many of the victims were Indigenous people from communities who are increasingly persecuted and directly harmed by policies that block asylum access.

NIJC Executive Director Mary Meg McCarthy reflected on the disaster saying: "We can only hope that this week’s tragedy in Ciudad Juarez serves as a wake-up call to the administration and members of Congress that deterrence policies are dangerous and deadly."

Members of Congress Push for a Chance to Come Home

On the Hill, members of Congress are pushing for a centralized process to review and reverse unjust deportations--a process which NIJC called for in our whitepaper, A Chance To Come Home. This is a significant show of support for immigrants who have been unfairly uprooted from their lives in the U.S. and who need an opportunity to return home.
