our Republic, and our democracy.

John,
THE SOAPBOX seeks to keep you connected to what’s happening at The Union and share news about our work to oppose anti-democratic forces in America.
STATE OF THE UNION: Democracy won in Wisconsin last night. Thank you to all the volunteers who pitched in and helped get out the vote, particularly our dedicated Abe Team. Your efforts, combined with thousands of others, helped democracy champion Judge Janet Protasiewicz win a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Her victory flips the narrowly divided court to a 4-3 pro-democracy majority. Now, the hard work of restoring democratic freedoms in Wisconsin can see meaningful results. If there was ever a time to urge like minded friends and family to join us – now is that time.

THE PLAYBOOK: Please make a plan to vote. The 2023 voting calendar is full of risks to democracy, but as we proved in Wisconsin, it has a fighting chance if we do the work. Others will learn from their defeat yesterday. Across the country, too many of them are seeking to impose extreme views and limit our freedoms. Yesterday alone, 10 states held elections for local offices, including school boards. The Union is paying particular attention to school board elections because of the extreme anti-democratic agenda many candidates are advancing.

THE PULSE: With his arraignment yesterday, Donald Trump and his enablers added more fuel to the chaos they crave. The other night, Sen. Lindsey Graham cried on Fox News as he begged people to give money to the defeated billionaire president. We cannot get distracted by Trump’s circus of charlatans, misfits, and clowns. This is only the beginning of a new chapter in his quest for power by keeping us divided.
----
Trump indictment furthers political division: Trump’s indictment, arraignment, and future trial will deepen the nation’s political divide. While we all believe he needs to be held accountable for his illegal acts, this process will only cause Trump to incite division and acrimony that will block any meaningful political cooperation and healing.

America is under attack from within: During a recent speech in Georgia, retired Judge Michael Luttig called out Republican leaders for not challenging Trump’s ongoing lies and threats. Luttig said, “America’s Democracy and the Rule of Law are in constitutional peril — still. And there is no end to the threat in sight… We are a house divided and our poisonous politics is fast eating away at the fabric of our society…. The Republican Party has made its decision that the war against America’s Democracy and the Rule of Law it instigated on January 6 will go on, prosecuted to its catastrophic end.”

Kevin McCarthy is no Newt Gingrich: Speaker McCarthy’s slim majority of Republicans in Congress is trapped inside itself, unable to agree on anything. The vocal hardline faction of Trump acolytes is in open conflict with Republican members that fear defeat in their more moderate districts. Compared to the larger majority Gingrich had, McCarthy is already confronted with the fact that his legacy will likely be of little consequence.

Debt ceiling hypocrisy: As an economic crisis looms, the infighting among House Republicans doesn’t give us much confidence about raising the nation’s debt ceiling. What’s so hypocritical is that McCarthy and his team have tied raising the debt ceiling (paying for what the government has already spent) to vague demands for draconian cuts to future spending. Yet, they can’t even agree among themselves on what to cut.

We’re making a difference: A big shout out to all the volunteers who pitched in and helped score some big wins for The Union during the first quarter of 2023.
