I’m writing to follow up on my email from last week asking for your support for our campaign to make polluters pay for the climate damage they’ve caused. The big five oil companies’ unprecedented 2022 profits only recently made the news again. And it is these very companies – Shell, BP, ExxonMobil, Total and Chevron – who are responsible for over four times more emissions than the least polluting 150 countries combined.
If you can, please donate £5 today to help us hold big fossil fuel companies accountable for the climate damage they have created. With your support we can ramp up our campaign and demand these companies are being taxed appropriately.

The UN’s latest climate report warns that over three billion people live in regions that are highly vulnerable to climate breakdown. Urgent action needs to be taken on all fronts and that includes supporting those most impacted by the climate crisis. The ‘loss and damage’ fund that was finally agreed at the last UN climate summit (COP27) is a major breakthrough for climate justice. Now governments including ours have to deliver on it. Holding big polluters accountable for the climate damage they’ve caused is a critical first step.
With the UK being one of the countries sitting on the crucial UN committee on loss and damage our voice is even more important. Some of the biggest polluters, including BP and Shell, are based in the UK making us well placed to push our government to increase taxation on these energy giants to pay for their damage. But we need support to expose these companies’ eye-watering profits in the media, mobilise more people to put pressure on our government and build strong coalitions with organisations fighting for climate justice across the world. While big fossil fuel companies’ shareholders are enjoying the biggest profits yet, millions around the world are suffering the impacts of climate change. But with more people behind us we can rein in the power of these companies and demand that compensation is paid by those who have profited for so long from creating climate change.

This is incredible progress for the climate movement given that it took three decades of tireless campaigning before a ‘loss and damage fund’ was finally agreed at the last UN climate summit (COP27). But now governments including ours, which sits on the crucial UN committee making the decisions, have to deliver on it. And that means holding big polluters accountable for the climate damage they’ve caused.

Big oil companies’ eye-watering profits made the news again only last month. While many parts of the world are struggling to recover from some of the most extreme climate disasters so far, big fossil fuel companies have been showering their shareholders with unprecedented profits.
ExxonMobil alone reported a net profit of $56 billion for 2022, setting a historic high for the Western oil industry. Shell announced the biggest profits in the company’s 115-year history, and BP celebrated record profits while scaling back their climate change plans. Together the ‘Big Five’ raked in unimaginable profits of $195 billion during 2022. And it is these very companies that are responsible for over four times the emissions than the least polluting 150 countries combined.
Reading figures like these is disturbing. But if we don’t change the rules, companies like ExxonMobil, BP, Shell, Chevron and Total will continue to pursue endless growth at the cost of the majority of people on this planet.
The UK is home to some of the most polluting corporations - BP and Shell - making us well placed to push our government to increase taxation on these energy giants to pay for their damage.
With your support we can expose these companies in the media, organise attention grabbing stunts and mobilise more people to take action with us. ** Let’s make sure big fossil fuel companies pay for their climate damage

When big companies hold so much power it can be daunting to take them on. But that is what we do. Together we can expose extreme corporate power and build a movement to challenge the structures that allow this damage to continue. And time is of the essence - we desperately need to change course.
This is a campaign we can’t fight alone. But with your support we can build resourceful coalitions here and internationally to help our movement become strong enough to stand against big polluters, and give our campaign the maximum impact.
Ultimately, we need to democratise energy production and move away from fossil fuels. But forcing big polluters to pay for the damage they have been causing is a good start.
The agreement to establish a loss and damage fund gives us immense hope. Energy giants’ mega profits in the context of a cost of living crisis and ever more climate driven disasters don’t bode well with the majority of people. And with big energy companies in the media spotlight, we have an opportunity to raise awareness and mobilise more people to put pressure on our government to take concrete measures for climate justice ahead of the next UN climate summit.
