John Delaney for President

Friends, this year marks 10 years since the Supreme Court ruled in the Citizens United, allowing the influence of corporate money in our elections.

Our politics and system of government are broken.

And as a direct result, politicians have the wrong incentives and limitless corporate money influencing our elections.

We need leaders who are immune to this corruption and committed to restoring our democracy.

John Delaney is that leader, and he has a plan to fix our broken politics.

Here's how we do it:

1. END GERRYMANDERING

Our system currently rewards partisan politicians who engage in inflammatory rhetoric and penalizes folks who are willing to compromise and work across the aisle.

How? One answer is that gerrymandering is directly contributing to our divisive political atmosphere.

When politicians are allowed to draw the borders of their own districts, they lose any incentive to look for common ground. Instead, this allows them to win re-election by pandering to more like-minded voters instead of building consensus with other communities and working across party lines to get things done.

Our system works best when the American people pick their representatives -- instead of politicians choosing their voters.

In Congress, John Delaney introduced the Open Our Democracy Act, which would ban gerrymandering and require states to establish independent commissions to draw Congressional district boundaries. It would also make Election Day a federal holiday so working folks have enough time to vote.

2. PROTECT VOTING RIGHTS

Next, we must do more to ensure that the right to vote is protected.

John supports the Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would require that states with a history of violating voting rights get approval from the Department of Justice before making any changes to election procedures or voting requirements.

He also supports automatic voter registration and same-day registration so that nobody is turned down at the polls simply because of a registration deadline.

3. OVERTURN CITIZENS UNITED

When the Supreme Court ruled in 2010 that corporations are allowed to spend money to influence our elections, our democracy took a serious blow.

Since then, unlimited corporate money has made our democracy pay-to-play. In order to return the power to the American people, John supports a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and ban corporate money in our elections.

4. DEBATE THE CONGRESS

Right now, our news and social media environment have made it harder for Americans to agree on what the basic facts are. One reason for that is so many Americans only hear the talking points from one side rather than hearing from both.

This results in endless gridlock, as politicians simply pass blame around while the American voters bear the penalty.

That's why as our next president, John pledges to debate Congress four times a year. Engaging with opposing points of view and focusing on the facts in a real debate is the best way to have an honest, substantive discussion about the problems our nation faces.

5. SUPPORT BIPARTISAN LEGISLATION

When people work across the aisle towards common goals, Americans lives are improved.

During the first 100 days of his presidency, John would advance only bipartisan bills.

John is also proposing a national service program to provide opportunities for recent high school graduates to contribute to the betterment of the country and to meet and work with people from all backgrounds.

All of these plans serve one common purpose: bringing the country together to restore our democracy.
