John,
Disgraced former President Donald Trump now has been criminally charged with 34 felony counts for falsifying business records.
This day of reckoning for Trump represents a major victory in Color Of Change’s ongoing work to support progressive prosecutors and demonstrates the powerful role they can play in seeking equal justice. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg refused to let corporate influence, racist right-wing attacks and threats of violence interfere with holding the former president accountable — demonstrating the kind of political courage we need from every district attorney in the country.
But the racist and anti-Semitic attacks launched against Bragg by Trump and his enablers in government and media also spotlight the reality of the national, coordinated effort by ultra-right actors to undermine the work of reform-minded local prosecutors.
Trump and other right-wingers are trying to intimidate progressive prosecutors into shying away from these crucial reforms. Color Of Change is fighting back and committed to winning the change we deserve.
STAND WITH PROGRESSIVE PROSECUTORS
Trump is taking a page out of the right-wing playbook and demanding that progressive prosecutors be removed from office. Many of these Black prosecutors are also under attack in Texas, Georgia, Florida and Missouri, as Republicans seek to remove them and undermine Black communities that elected these prosecutors to reform our broken criminal justice system.
Color Of Change is proud to support progressive district attorneys like Bragg who are committed to reforming the criminal legal system while demanding accountability from the rich and powerful. We will continue to support prosecutors, who are enact sensible reforms, stop targeted attacks on people of color, hold those in power accountable and strive to ensure justice for all.
Together, we can work to:
- End practices that land our children in adult jails and prisons, which only lead to further trauma.
- Demand transparency and accountability related to sentencing, diversion programs, probation, parole and internal office policies.
- Hold police accountable in ways that address systemic issues rather than temporary solutions.
- And more.
Now that Trump has been hit with 34 felony charges, we know there will be an even greater wave of backlash against the reform-minded local prosecutors who we need to help make these changes a reality. We won’t go backwards.
