Friend, There is a growing movement to address the single-use items we encounter every day. From plastic bags to coffee cups, people are questioning those items that serve us for a few minutes before being sent to landfills or incinerators. Another common item with unnecessary impacts is the paper receipt. In the US alone, receipt production uses over three million trees and nine billion gallons water. Receipts emit enough greenhouse gas emissions to equal 450,000 cars on the road each year. And many receipts are printed automatically, whether people request take them or not. We surveyed Americans on receipt preferences and learned that 89 percent of people think retailers should offer digital receipt options. Here’s what else we learned: - Nearly 40 percent of respondents have already signed up for digital receipts from stores that offer that option. The largest support for digital receipts came from those identifying as 44 years old or younger.
- The primary reasons people cited for why they prefer digital receipts are the environment and ease of receipt storage.
- On average, respondents say that they end up throwing away or losing over half of paper receipts that they receive, even ones that they intended to keep.
- Over 50 percent of respondents stated they throw away or lose between half and all of the paper receipts they receive.
- A third of all respondents want to see companies do more to reduce receipt waste.
This is why we're urging retailers to improve receipt practices by offering a digital option, end automatic printing of receipts, and only provide non-toxic paper for customers who do want a paper receipt.
