Dear John,
Aquatic animals have been ignored for too long. Even as the public becomes more aware of the suffering of chickens, pigs, and cows, aquatic animals are largely excluded from the conversation. Meanwhile, industrial fish farming is on the rise.
Last week, we released a short film that aims to change that. Featuring drone investigation footage from fish farms around the United States, the film reveals the true conditions on these farms. Just like many farmed land animals, fishes raised there suffer in crowded, waste-filled enclosures.
Drone pilot Mark Devries also speaks with fish welfare experts who reveal that fish farm conditions are so horrible that many animals become severely stressed and depressed—essentially giving up on life.
We hope investigations like this one will help more people to see fishes as individuals who have emotional lives and suffer profoundly in captivity, just as humans would.
