John, the evidence is clear: We have a gun violence crisis. And we need to act.

Firearm injury has surpassed car accidents as the leading cause of death in children. Month after month, communities across the country are torn apart by school shootings.

We know we need positive change now, but Republicans fight us at every step and even push us backward to ease safeguards on guns to make them easier to get into the wrong hands. We cannot accept this.

John, I am doing whatever I can to protect our children and our communities. I recently signed an executive order establishing the Office of Violence Prevention for North Carolina because I am committed to fighting gun violence and protecting our people.

Meanwhile, just days after the massacre in Nashville, our GOP-controlled General Assembly voted to roll back protections against gun violence. It’s an egregious example of putting the priorities of the gun lobby over the safety of our people.

John, solving any public health crisis relies on following the data and employing best practices. And make no mistake: gun violence is a public health crisis. An average of five North Carolinians a day die from firearm injury.

All of us deserve to feel safe in our homes, schools, and communities. That’s why Democratic lawmakers continue to propose reasonable reforms — like stronger background checks and red flag laws — that would save lives.
