Do you have a hard to read license plate? In PA, you can be
pulled over if any of the letters or numbers on your plate can't be
recognized from 50 feet away. Protect yourself from this at our FREE
Hard-to-Read License Plate Replacement Event!

My office is partnering
with the Harrison Township Police Department to complete replacement
forms for license plates that are peeling, damaged, or otherwise
illegible. Participants need the following to attend the event:

-
The owner(s) of the
car.*

-
A current driver's license for the car owner(s)

-
A
current car registration with the title number, VIN, and license plate
number

*If the co-owner of the car isn't able to be at the event,
you will have to take the form home for the other owner to sign before
submitting the paperwork.

PennDOT will replace the license plate for
FREE once they process the required paperwork. The new license plate
will be sent directly to you! If you have questions, please contact us

*Groundbreaking
at Pittsburgh Glass Center*

I was thrilled to join Representative
Sara Innamorato [link 7] and Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitgerald
[link 8] at the Pittsburgh Glass Center (PGC) [link 9] for their Hot
Glass Pour to mark the groundbreaking for their upcoming expansion
last week. This new larger facility will provide affordable artist
housing, as well as meeting and event space for community members and
non-profits. Thank you to PGC for being a leader not just through your
art, but by bringing opportunity, innovation, and economic development
to the region. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next as you
continue to "shatter" expectations.

*AIU
Legislative Forum on Education*

I had a great time at the Allegheny
Intermediate Unit (AIU [link 10])'s Annual Allegheny County
Legislative Forum on Education on March 23rd, moderated by Jon Delano
of KDKA-TV. As always, this was a great discussion about many of the
issues facing our public schools, students, families, and educators.
Getting to hear from teachers and staff members about what they're
facing on the front lines is always incredibly helpful for
legislators, and I appreciate getting a chance to talk to them
directly.

*Youth
Symposium at Environmental Charter School, Pittsburgh*

Thank you to
Delta Phi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. -
Pittsburgh, PA [link 11] for inviting me to speak at your Annual Youth
Symposium on March 25th at Environmental Charter School Pittsburgh
[link 12]! I really loved the opportunity to talk with students and
parents about the importance of getting involved in and serving our
communities.

*PA
Commission for Community Colleges and Association of Independent
Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania*

I had the chance to speak
to the PA Commission for Community Colleges [link 13] last Monday at
their annual meeting. We had a lively discussion that acknowledged the
critical role community colleges play in Pennsylvania's workforce
goals while also providing an economical bridge to post-secondary
education.

I also had the chance to join the Association of
Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) [link
14] last week to talk about this year's budget and other priorities in
education for the coming year. Both of these meetings were a great
chance to talk to leaders in the field about how the legislature can
best support Pennsylvania's next generation of graduates!

*PA
School Librarians Association Presidential Award! *

On Saturday I
spent a fantastic morning with members of the PA School Librarians
Association at their Annual Meeting, celebrating all of the work that
our school librarians do every single day.

I was incredibly honored
to receive their Presidential Award this year-- but I'm even more
thankful that I've had help from amazing school librarians like Fox
Chapel Area School District [link 15]'s Dr. Laura Ward. Dr. Ward was
instrumental in helping me to prepare to fight back against book ban
legislation. She gave me what I needed to go into that Education
Committee Meeting and stand up for all students, their experiences,
and our libraries. And for that, I'll be forever
grateful.

*Appropriations
Hearing on Education*

Last Thursday's budget hearing with Acting
Secretary Mumin of the Pennsylvania Department of Education [link 16]
covered a wide range of topics from Head Start and Pre-K programs to
higher education and student debt.

I was glad to talk about Office of
the Governor of Pennsylvania [link 17] Shapiro's proposed investment
in making the Universal School Breakfast program permanent.
Pennsylvania needs to be a leader in making sure all students have a
nutritious breakfast and lunch available to them every single day.
Acting Secretary Mumin mentioned that, during the pandemic, schools
saw an increase in daily attendance as students came to school because
meals were free and available to all. We need our kids in the
building, ready to learn every day, and Universal School Meals is a
great step towards making that
happen.

We
also heard testimony from leaders from the State-Related Universities
(Pitt, Penn State, Temple, and Lincoln) and the Chancellor of the PA
State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) on Thursday. Testimony
focused on continuing mental health supports and how these
universities are addressing learning losses from the pandemic. We also
discussed supporting the workers on each campus as they seek to
collectively bargain.

*Transgender
Day of Visibility*

My colleagues Senator Amanda Cappelletti [link
19], Senator Katie Muth [link 20], and Senator Tim Kearney [link 21]
recently reintroduced a package of legislation that would streamline
the administrative name change process here in the state of
Pennsylvania. While this legislation will help all Pennsylvanians
looking to legally change their names, it will provide particular aid
to the transgender and non-binary communities, who face real harm due
to the delay, cost, and confusion in our current process.

I consider
it my responsibility as a legislator to not only defend trans lives,
but to provide proactive solutions to help them navigate our
government systems with the safety and dignity that they
deserve.

This package includes the following legislation:

-
Administrative Name Change Reform (Senate Bill 530)

-
Navigating
PA's Current Name Change Process (Senate Bill 526)

-
Transgender
Name Change Assistance Grants (Senate Bill 524)

-
Removing
Publication Requirements for Name Changes (Senate Bill 528)

-
Ending Felony Prohibition for Name Changes

-
Removal of Sex from
Birth Certificate (Senate Bill
523)
