Dear Friend,
We join with people around the world today in congratulating the
Guardian newspaper in its "huge" decision to ban fossil fuel advertisements as a way to address the climate crisis.
As I write this, our top headline is about how important this step is, and we highlight the "watershed moment" it represents in the global effort to loosen the grip on society that the oil, gas, and coal companies hold.
Common Dreams, however, is not among those media outlets now being asked to join the
Guardian in this brave move. Why not?
Because we banned fossil fuel advertisements on our pages the very day we were founded—more than two decades ago.
Our reader-funded model has allowed us to be unequivocal in our climate coverage over these decades—never fearful of upsetting the wrong person or losing a corporate sponsor. But this model only ever works because of readers like you.
So please, applaud the
Guardian and any other outlet that joins them. It's a great step. But don't forget independent outlets who long ago made the decision that the only way to save the world and provide unvarnished coverage of our warming planet was by eschewing support from the deadly forces set on destroying it.
In solidarity and thanks.
