John, Donald Trump is turning himself in today, per CNN. [1]
After a weekend spent playing golf, he flew into New York on Monday to stay at Trump Tower overnight. This afternoon, he’ll be chauffeured to the Manhattan district attorney’s office – where he won’t be handcuffed, and may not even take a mugshot.
When he’s done, he’ll be escorted back to his motorcade and taken to the airport to return to his expansive beachfront estate, Mar-a-Lago.
Yet just miles away from Trump’s resort last fall, Black Florida residents were yanked out of bed in the middle of the night without time to get dressed, then taken to jail at gunpoint – all for the “crime” of not realizing they were ineligible to vote.
John, we can’t think of a more stark illustration of the inequality in our so-called “justice” system: The rich and powerful continue to enjoy every luxury regardless of their crimes, while the law comes down hardest against poor people and people of color. Add your name if you agree: it’s time to end this double standard.
After Common Cause exposed this scandal in 2018, Trump now stands accused of paying illegal hush money to Stormy Daniels to protect his 2016 election bid – then falsifying his business records to cover it up.
Donald Trump is wealthy and powerful – so our legal system treats him better, with the dignity and respect that it denies far too many others.
The injustice is clear. As he stands accused of deliberately and illegally influencing our elections, Donald Trump gets private planes, penthouse overnights, and motorcades. But people who believed they were eligible to vote and made an honest mistake aren’t even allowed to put on pants before being handcuffed and arrested.
It’s an egregious, racist, and humiliating double standard – and that’s NOT how our democracy should work. We can’t continue to have two systems of “justice” in this country – and we can’t keep giving free passes to the rich, white, and powerful.
We’re pushing back against these two systems of “justice” – but we need you with us if we want real change. Join us in sending a message that we won’t tolerate the racist double standards in our legal system.
Donald Trump should not be getting special treatment while poor people and people of color are dehumanized by our legal system. We hope you’ll join us in calling for equality today.
Thanks for all you do,
Marilyn Carpinteyro and Jordan Davis, Interim Co-Presidents
and the team at Common Cause
