Team:
Every day at NILC, we are fighting for a country where everyone is safe, protected, and has the freedom to thrive. The roadmap of how to get there is ambitious, but not impossible, especially with supporters like you by our side. We kicked off 2023 by zeroing in on our top priorities and opportunities and got to work right away. Here’s what our list looks like:
- Pushing Congress to pass a law that provides a pathway to citizenship for immigrant youth. With DACA facing real threats in court, hundreds of thousands of people are at risk of losing protection, the ability to work, and potentially even being separated from their loved ones. The majority of the public wants Congress to come together to deliver a solution, and we are not going to let up until they do.
- Restoring access to asylum at the border and ending policies that endanger people’s lives. With the expansion of Title 42 expulsions, a new asylum ban, and reports of potentially detaining families, the Biden administration has started down a backwards path of embracing failed deterrence policies at the border. No matter who is in the White House, we will always stand up for families seeking safety at our border.
- After years of organizing by workers and advocates, DHS issued guidance for how immigrant workers in labor disputes with abusive employers can access temporary protections, including work authorization and protection from deportation. By alleviating the fear of employer retaliation, immigrant workers will be able to report abusive conditions and that will make workplaces safer for all workers. After being at the forefront of securing this policy for many years, NILC is now focusing on ensuring that workers everywhere are aware of the policy and have the ability and resources to apply should they need to.
- Advancing the health and wellbeing of immigrant communities on two fronts. First, by ensuring the Biden administration educates immigrant communities about the new public charge rule so they can safely access health and basic needs programs. Second, by continuing to press Congress to pass the LIFT the BAR Act and the HEAL for Immigrant Families Act, two pieces of legislation that together would restore access to necessary health care and social services to hundreds of thousands of immigrant families.
Our top priorities are ambitious and will take the courage, dedication, and support of people like you for our collective mission. So, we’re asking, friend — will you add a donation to help us reach our critical $250,000 spring fundraising goal? Anything you can donate will make a big impact.
Our work wouldn’t be possible without your support. We’re proud and grateful to have you on our side.
Sincerely,
Kica Matos
