This week, the screen lights up for Bridging Worlds: Exploring Latin American and Latinx Stories Across Borders and Cultures, a new collection that partners four features with a short, co-curated with Cinema Tropical.

We begin with two insightful documentaries that highlight the experiences of individuals challenging traditional gender roles and norms in Mexico's Pacific coast. These films offer a poignant examination of the complex experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in Mexico who go against the currents of deeply entrenched machismo and social conservatism.

Muxes, a short film by Iván Olita, focuses on the long-standing traditions among the nonbinary Indigenous residents in the rural community of Juchitán, Oaxaca. Meanwhile, Things We Dare Not Do, directed by Bruno Santamaría, follows the story of Noño, a 16-year-old living in a small coastal village, as he confronts the transphobia prevalent in Mexican society and works up the courage to tell his family he wants to live his life as a woman.
