Scientists warn that climate change poses unprecedented threats to humanity and biodiversity. Every day, our world lurches closer to a climate catastrophe. PopEd’s Quarterly Theme: Focus on Solid Waste
Population Education’s latest quarterly theme is solid waste. A rapidly growing human population, coupled with a rise in economic development and material consumption around the world, has resulted in an ever-expanding waste footprint. Where does this waste go? How does it impact our land, water quality, and communities? What strategies will effectively decrease the amount of waste sitting in our landfills in the future?
These are just some of the questions PopEd’s classroom materials will help students answer during the first quarter of 2020. One lesson that explores this topic is “Trash Trouble in Paradise,” a high school-level lesson plan that ask students to consider real-world social, economic, and environmental factors associated with locating a proposed landfill on the Hawaiian island of O’ahu. Download the full lesson plan here.
See other lesson plans and links to PopEd’s social media pages on the blog post announcing the theme on their website!
