Friend -
Continuing our campaign to highlight the need to support “down ballot” races (local and state elections that fly under the radar) that we need to note for the very large investments being made by the Right under our noses. It is pretty clear that the Right (people like Leonard Leo and Patriot Mobile [[link removed]] ) are employing a version of our strategy to build a bench of candidates that can impact overall politics down the line. Down ballot races are a way to test political narratives like “anti-woke” rhetoric in Southland Texas or soft on crime attacks in the Wisconsin State Supreme Court race happening now.
The danger of this work has been clear since the appointment of three conservative Supreme Court judges who were groomed and supported when they were down ballot candidates by the now infamous Leonard Leo (Federalist Society). Now allies of Leo, the Uihleins, are contributing millions to attack and disgrace Janet Protasiewicz , the progressive candidate for WI Supreme Court. They have spent millions on opposition [[link removed]] research and communications with vicious negative campaigning.
In Texas, an openly conservative phone company, Patriot Mobile [[link removed]] , is waging a school board attack on critical race theory and “wokism”. They supported 11 school board candidates across 4 counties and won all of them last November. Spending more than $800K on these races they are creating a blueprint on how to engage local school districts around anti-woke policies [[link removed]] . This has been lauded by Fox and other conservative groups as a blueprint for attacking down ballot races with large amounts of money.
In Arizona the state Treasurer is waging a major campaign to support fossil fuels and control $53 billion in pension funds to do it. She won in a low expenditure race as an incumbent mainly because she stayed away from association with Trump prior to the election and stayed under the radar as an incumbent. Then after being elected she took a hard Right and is now waging this anti-woke capitalism campaign.
Please stay tuned as we continue our coverage of our Down is What’s Up! campaign and news about how the Right is using down ballot races, testing messaging and candidates for future seats. And if you live in WI, please go out and vote in today's Wisconsin State Supreme Court (SCOWIS) election.
More WhARF news next week,
