Co-Chairs of the European Green Party

Dear John,

Last Friday, leaders from Green parties across Europe came together to
strategise our next venture as a united political family: the 2024 European
Parliament election campaign. As you know, the stakes are high in these
elections, with Europe facing multiple crises – from the climate
emergency to inflation, attacks on the rule of law, and the rise of the
far-right.

We, the European Greens, are the only political force that puts forward
credible solutions acknowledging the interdependence and mutuality of these
crises, instead of pitting one crisis against the other.

WE TAKE RESPONSIBILITY!

As Greens we are ready to take responsibility. We aim to be at the heart of
new majorities at the EU level. Already today, we are delivering solutions
to improve people’s quality of life, protect the planet, and protect more
rights for the most vulnerable in national, regional and city governments
across Europe.

Also, at European level we are delivering: Strong Greens in the European
Parliament are the reason why the European Union has a Green Deal.

THE EU PROJECT IS IN DANGER

Mainstream political forces, especially the EPP, are normalising the
far-right, and collaborate with them. This rapprochement puts the entire EU
project in danger.

We clearly refuse to cooperate with the far-right, and we know that the
next European majority must put climate ambitions, social justice, and
protection of fundamental rights and democracy at the centre of its
programs. Otherwise, we will not be able to solve any of the many crises
Europeans are facing now and will be facing in the future.

WE NEED A _SPITZENKANDIDATEN_ PROCESS

We no longer tolerate backdoor horse-trading between the member states in
the European Council over the EU’s top jobs. Today, the
_Spitzenkandidaten_ process is the strongest democratic tool at our
disposal to give EU citizens a direct say in deciding who would be the next
European Commission President.

We remain steadfast in our support for this process and urge all parties to
join us in supporting it.

NON-EU MEMBER PARTIES ARE NO SECOND-CLASS MEMBERS!

The European Council’s plans to severely strip the rights of non-EU
member parties within EU Political Parties would degrade them to
second-class members.

As Greens we are very clear: Non-EU member parties are part of our family.
They should have the right to vote and be elected as equal members of the
European political families.

After Friday’s meeting, we are more determined than ever to build a
stronger, greener, and fairer Europe. With your continued support, we can
make this vision a reality.
