John,
One of the nation’s largest drugstore chains is giving in to intimidation from right wing politicians, and thereby failing to provide safe and effective medical treatment for their customers in multiple red states.
The attorneys general of 20 states, including 10 states in which other forms of abortion are legal and available, sent a letter to Walgreens threatening legal action for providing patients with the prescription abortion medication mifepristone… and Walgreens caved.
Let Walgreens know they will lose your business for giving in to partisan pressure and failing to support women’s reproductive rights. Sign the petition now.
Walgreens has announced that it will not dispense mifespristone in Alaska, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, and Utah -- all states in which other forms of abortion are still legal. Kansas even reaffirmed the right last year in an historic statewide vote.
Add to this the 11 additional states with some form of abortion ban in place already -- Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, South Dakota, and Idaho -- and millions of Americans are left without access to one of the safest means to terminate a pregnancy.
But let’s be clear, this medication isn’t just used for abortion care. Mifespristone is also prescribed to ease the pain of miscarriage and in specific cases of Cushing's syndrome.
Huge swaths of the American South and Midwest have become an abortion desert where women are denied the right to make their own reproductive choices, and are denied access to what may be life-saving treatment. Since so many of these states are geographically close to one another and traveling away from home can be expensive, women who live in these regions may not be able to travel far enough to escape these restrictions.
Walgreens’ decision to stop filling prescriptions for mifepristone in 20 states will make the situation significantly worse. Let them know we will not tolerate their interference in medical decisions that belong to a woman in consultation with her doctor. Tell Walgreens to stand up to anti-choice Republicans now.
Thank you for doing your part to push back against the erosion of essential women’s rights.
