(tw: stories / mentions of sexual abuse)
So we know people in power and conservatives use culture wars in order to distract and diffuse us from challenging institutions of power, right? I want to talk about how the attacks on trans and LGBTQ+ people factor into this.
The first time I was ever hit on by a grown man, I was about 13 or 14 years old. I still had braces in my teeth.
I can’t tell you how many stories I, and almost every woman I know, have about things like this.
Many of these disgusting attacks on trans and LGBT people are actually projections of what predatory, cisgender, and often straight men do when left alone in the presence of women – or sometimes, horribly, children.
To distract you from challenging the patriarchy, they're trying to get you to attack the very gender expressiveness of gender non-conforming people that disrupts the patriarchy. And it’s the LGBTQ+ community doing much of the work of challenging those same patriarchal and oppressive norms that uphold the kinds of silence that benefits abusers.
Equality Federation is an advocacy accelerator rooted in social justice and focused on building power for state-based lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) advocacy organizations. 100% of your donation will go directly to Equity Federation.
It is critical that we stand with our trans and LGBTQ+ neighbors. Their safety is all our safety.
