John, when President Obama was sworn into office back in 2009, the very first bill he signed was the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
This legislation was a big step forward in our fight to end pay discrimination – and I was incredibly proud to vote for it. But that was only the first step. Today, more than 10 years after the Lily Ledbetter Act was signed, women are STILL paid less than their male counterparts. And the disparities are even more severe for women of color.
Pay discrimination has always been wrong. But for it to still be so rampant in the United States in 2023 is just plain embarrassing.
That's why my Democratic colleagues and I are doing something about it.
We've once again introduced the Paycheck Fairness Act to strengthen the protections of the Equal Pay Act and ensure that all Americans get the same pay for the same work.
I'm going to fight tooth and nail to get this legislation passed. But truthfully, we are only going to make real progress on issues like this one if we maintain control of the Senate. And experts are already saying Mitch McConnell has a "clear path" to destroying our hard-won majority.
It's going to take a huge grassroots movement to stop Mitch McConnell and his megadonors. That's why I'm asking you to chip in $5 before midnight tonight so that we can defend our Senate majority and keep tackling issues like pay equity head-on. Please, will you donate now?
