March Recap

Below are updates on what has been happening in Albany throughout the month of February. We will be asking you to take action on a number of the issues below over the course of the legislative session, so stay tuned.

NYS Budget

Unfortunately, at this time, the NYS legislature and Governor Hochul have not reached an agreement on the 2023-2023 state budget, which was due April 1. We don't expect the budget to be passed until after the Easter break. Once the budget is finalized, look out for our round-up email detailing the results of the NYS bishops' items of interest.

Respect Life

The NYS Assembly is advancing legislation (A1395-B) to provide abortion drugs to students on all public college (SUNY/CUNY) campuses. The social pressures and availability of harmful substances combine to make campus a wholly inappropriate place to offer dangerous medication to young women, some as young as 17. Despite claims to the contrary, the abortion pill is not “one of the safest and most effective medications.” This is a dangerous and misguided bill. Read our full memo of opposition here and take action below.

Education

With the horrific shooting recently at the Covenant Christian school in Nashville, we are grateful that lawmakers are seeking additional funding to help religious and independent schools undertake additional safety and security measures.  We also continue to seek additional funding to help our schools address the learning loss and academic needs of students and to ensure schools are fully reimbursed for mandated services. Take action below.

NYS Eucharistic Congress

As part of the National Eucharistic Revival, the Bishops of the State of New York are hosting a statewide Eucharistic Congress October 20-22, 2023 at the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs in Auriesville, New York.
