Dear John,

As I sit down to write this message, I cannot help but feel a mix of emotions. After several years leading UNHCR’s Emergencies and External Engagement team, it is time for me to move on to new challenges.

Throughout my time here, your support and generosity have been a constant source of inspiration and motivation. From Kosovo to Lebanon, Liberia to Afghanistan, I have also been so inspired by the refugees and displaced people I have met in my work in all corners of the globe. People who have fled violence or persecution, yet who day in day out have shown amazing courage and resilience in the face of these challenges.

Together, their strength and your support make our work possible.

Together, we have been there to respond immediately to numerous emergencies, from natural disasters to conflict. Each time, our teams at UNHCR have been on the frontlines giving life-saving assistance to the most vulnerable. Whether providing emergency shelter and supplies like tents, kitchen sets, and thermal blankets, offering psychological first aid, or helping reunite families, your support has made a tangible difference in people’s lives.

As I start a new chapter, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping refugees, internally displaced and stateless people. My commitment to serving people forced to flee their homes has not changed and will continue, and I know so will yours.

In upcoming emails you’ll be hearing from many of my hardworking colleagues at UNHCR who will keep you up to date with breaking emergencies and protracted crises where refugees and displaced people urgently need your continued support.

Thank you once again for your commitment and care, and please know that your partnership has made - and will continue to make – such a huge difference for people forced to flee.

I very much hope our paths will cross again soon.

Warm Regards,

Astrid van Genderen Stort
