Harmful LGBT Language in Personal Data Collection Bill by Republican Representative Rep. Shelby Slawson is carrying House Bill 18 to protect minors from having their personal information data collected by large tech companies such as Meta or Google. The problem is, harmful language placed in the bill by drafters includes an LGBT "sexual orientation" reference which undermines the bill's purpose and gives a foothold in law for liberal organizations like the ACLU and Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) to propagate gender identity and sexual orientation language to all Texas public schools. Our policy team reached out to Rep. Slawson's office about this "sexual orientation" language and we asked her to remove just these two words, but we are not at this point certain about her intent. We were told that there will be an updated version, but it has not been provided to us yet, and we have not been given assurance that sexual orientation language has been or will be removed. We cannot let this happen. Sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) laws trample fundamental rights Legislation that includes references to "sexual orientation" or "gender identity" are used as a sword against Christians and threaten convictions such as that marriage is the union of one man and one woman or that maleness and femaleness are objective biological realities to be valued and affirmed, not rejected or altered. We work every session to make sure that sexual orientation and gender identity language do not get added to state law. You can read the actual language on the State of Texas's legislative website here. Scroll down to page 2, line 11. |
