What happens to a horse who is no longer wanted? The unimaginable.

Unwanted horses—companion animals or former racehorses and workhorses—are all too often sold to the highest bidder at a horse auction. These “kill-buyers” then sell the horses to be shipped across our country’s borders to be slaughtered for meat.

Tens of thousands of horses are victims every year. Will you stop their suffering by urging your legislator to support reintroduction of the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act and end the slaughter of American horses? ([link removed])

The horses sent for slaughter endure a grueling journey. They’re crammed in a trailer with other horses and deprived of food, water, and rest, sometimes for days. At the end of the horrific journey, the horses are cruelly slaughtered. This inhumane practice is entirely legal and must end now. That’s why your legislators need to hear from you.

Two of the biggest horse races of the year happen next month: the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby. But as fans gather to watch these events, there are horses who don’t make the spotlight. Horses who are suffering and destined for slaughter—including horses like those racing down the track.

Please tell your legislators that you support legislation to keep our equines safe. ([link removed]) The SAFE Act would permanently ban domestic horse slaughter in the U.S. and prohibit the export of American horses for slaughter outside the country. Horses need your urgent action today.
