Donations to Donald Trump’s Campaign Surpass $4 Million After His Indictment Announcement

New York Post: Former President Donald Trump raised more than $4 million toward his presidential run in the 24 hours since he was indicted by a Manhattan grand jury, his campaign announced Friday. The campaign noted that more than 25% of the donations came from first-time Trump donors, and the average contribution was $34 (New York Post). HotAir: This wasn’t even close to a fundraising record for Trump, but it definitely wasn’t too shabby considering that we’re still nearly two years away from the election and the primary has barely gotten off the ground. A huge number of those donations came from people who had never donated to Trump before and the majority of the contributions were in small amounts, suggesting a predominantly working-class, grassroots army of people who were outraged at Bragg (HotAir).

Secretary Blinken Demands Russia Release Two American Prisoners
Associated Press: Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged his Russian counterpart, in a rare phone call between the diplomats since the Ukraine war, to immediately release a Wall Street Journal reporter who was detained last week as well as another imprisoned American, Paul Whelan, the State Department said Sunday. Blinken called for his immediate release (Associated Press). Wall Street Journal: U.S. diplomats in Russia have started what has become a familiar waiting game with Russian officials over a detained citizen, as they press for a visit with Mr. Gershkovich. Little is known about Mr. Gershkovich’s condition or well-being since he was taken into custody Wednesday by officers with the Russian Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, while he was on assignment outside of Moscow. The State Department has demanded consular officials be permitted to visit the 31-year old reporter to ascertain his well-being and get as much information about his circumstances as they can (Wall Street Journal).

Biden Refuses to Meet with Speaker McCarthy to Discuss the Debt Ceiling
ABC: Tensions boiled over this week between the White House and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, with both refusing to blink amid an impasse on the budget and debt ceiling. McCarthy pressed President Joe Biden to start more robust negotiations over raising the nation’s borrowing limit ahead of the Congressional Budget Act’s April 15 deadline, marking the first major step in weeks on the issue. Biden suggested there’s little point in a sit-down until House Republicans introduce a formal budget, which he called on them to do before the Easter recess (ABC). Bloomberg: House Republicans are finalizing a bill combining an increase in the US debt ceiling with spending cuts, energy deregulation and other GOP priorities, Speaker Kevin McCarthy told reporters. McCarthy added that his party would be prepared to pass the bill should President Joe Biden refuse to negotiate. Republicans hold a narrow majority in the House, but the bill is opposed by Democrats, who control the Senate (Bloomberg).

DHS Secretary Refuses to Call Border Situation a “Crisis”
Fox News: Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas again refused to call the ongoing situation at the southern border a “crisis” in an interview, claiming that admitting the situation was a crisis would indicate a “withdrawal from our mission.” Mayorkas was asked during an interview with “60 Minutes” whether he viewed the ongoing situation at the border — which saw a record 1.7 million migrant encounters in FY 2021 and more than 2.3 million in FY 2022 — as a crisis. “I view it as a significant challenge,” Mayorkas said, echoing the answer he has given to that question on multiple occasions (Fox News). RNC Research: 6.1+ million illegal immigrants have crossed the border since Biden took office, but Biden Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas declines (THREE TIMES) to call it a “crisis” (Twitter).

Conservative Activist Assaulted by Trans Activists, Police Take Side of Attackers
Fox News: Popular conservative activist “Billboard Chris” appeared to be violently assaulted by aggressive transgender activists at a pro-trans rally in Vancouver, Canada. Though police seemed to break up the assault after it began, the conservative activist stated that Vancouver PD “did nothing” to keep the militant trans rally goer from assaulting him beyond making sure he wasn’t injured more in the attack. He also spoke to one of the officers monitoring the rally that day, who argued that both sides were at fault, pushing back on the conservative’s claim that he was peacefully protesting at the trans rally (Fox News). Billboard Chris: Another angle of the assault on me today. Police did nothing. The investigating officer says I instigated, and she told me it was a mutual fight (Twitter). Dan Dicks: I showed this officer footage of BillboardChris getting physically assaulted 3 TIMES and she says that HE incited violence by wearing his sign (Twitter).

Biden Looking to Ban Incandescent Light Bulbs
Fox News: The Biden administration is preparing to implement a sweeping nationwide ban on commonly used light bulbs as part of its energy efficiency and climate agenda. The regulations, which prohibit retailers from selling incandescent light bulbs, were finalized by the Department of Energy (DOE) in April 2022 and are slated to go into effect on Aug. 1, 2023. The DOE will begin full enforcement of the ban on that date, but it has already urged retailers to begin transitioning away from the light bulb type and, in recent months, begun issuing warning notices to companies. According to the DOE announcement, the regulations will save consumers an estimated $3 billion per year on utility bills and cut carbon emissions by 222 million metric tons over the next three decades (Fox News). Carmine Sabia: First gas stoves, then air conditioners, then washing machines and now light bulbs again. The Biden Ban It administration. Remember everyone government knows what is best for you. You do not need any choices (Twitter).

Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson Announces 2024 Run
Townhall: Former Republican Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson announced his official run for the 2024 White House. Hutchinson served two terms as the state’s governor, replaced by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders. He will face former President Trump, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and Gov. Ron DeSantis, should he decide to run (Townhall). This Week: EXCLUSIVE: Former GOP Gov. Asa Hutchinson announces during an interview with Jon Karl that he will be running for president. “I’m convinced that people want leaders that appeal to the best of America and not simply appeal to our worst instincts” (Twitter).

DHS to Allow Immigrant Applicants to Select Gender of Their Choosing Without Providing Additional Documentation
Washington Examiner: Homeland Security’s legal immigration agency will now allow applicants to select a gender of their choice without having to provide supporting documentation that matches. Those who already have records in the system can also change that previous selection without the need for proof, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said. The only exception is for someone who’s already a citizen, in which case proof will be required. USCIS announced the change Friday, and it was effective immediately (Washington Examiner). HotAir: It’s no coincidence that the administration chose to make this announcement on Friday – the day that Joe Biden officially proclaimed Transgender Day of Visibility. Every decision coming from this administration is a political one and this policy decision announcement is no different (HotAir).

Eight Bodies Found Along Northern Border Attempting to Illegally Immigrate Into US
New York Times: The bodies of eight people — among them at least one young child — were found on Thursday in the St. Lawrence River in Quebec, the police said on Friday, a deadly ending to what the authorities called an illegal migrant crossing from Canada to the United States. There were heavy winds on Wednesday night along the river when it was believed the migrants tried to cross, and that likely played a role in their deaths, Chief Benedict said (New York Times). Daily Wire: Meanwhile, the southern border continues to be a gigantic sieve. In fiscal year 2022, border crossings cracked a record 2.7 million. That trend has continued into fiscal year 2023. Of cours reform is needed to solve this problem. Unfortunately, though, those policies will never happen under Biden. The sort of “reform” needed to stop this madness is a definitive declaration to the world that if you come here illegally, you will be deported. Talks of amnesty need to be taken off the table — as that only incentivizes more illegal aliens to come in hopes of being granted citizenship (Daily Wire).

Italy Bans Use of ChatGPT Over Privacy Concerns
BBC: Italy has become the first Western country to block advanced chatbot ChatGPT. The Italian data-protection authority said there were privacy concerns relating to the model, which was created by US start-up OpenAI and is backed by Microsoft. The regulator said it would ban and investigate OpenAI “with immediate effect”. OpenAI told the BBC it complied with privacy laws. Millions of people have used ChatGPT since it launched in November 2022. It can answer questions using natural, human-like language and it can also mimic other writing styles, using the internet as it was in 2021 as its database. Microsoft has spent billions of dollars on it and it was added to Bing last month. There have been concerns over the potential risks of artificial intelligence (AI), including its threat to jobs and the spreading of misinformation and bias (BBC).
