You don’t need me to tell you how important next year’s elections will be. But the truth is that in states across the country, democracy is on the ballot this year, in 2023, not just in 2024. That’s because American life as we have come to define it is at stake in every state judicial election. Too many extremist judges are determined to remake America in a way that is inconsistent with the desires of the nation’s people.

In just a matter of days, Wisconsin holds a critically important election for the state’s highest court, and right-wing activists are spending millions to help elect their preferred judge. To get an idea of what Republicans are hoping to accomplish through the courts, we only need to look at what politicians are doing in North Carolina.
Last year at North Carolina’s state supreme court, our affiliate won a huge victory for fair maps and voting rights. But now Republican politicians are asking to overturn that ruling – even though the only thing that has changed is the makeup of the justices on the court.
By attempting to fill state supreme court benches with hard right ideologues, Republicans are going down a dangerous path that could challenge the independence of our courts, reduce the public’s faith in them, and weaken our system of checks and balances. From reproductive freedom to voting fairness, everything we value is on the line.
