ACTION SPOTLIGHT

Fight climate change, save America's
mature forests

Forests are natural climate solutions —
especially our country's mature and old-growth forests and trees.
Safeguarding and expanding carbon-rich forests on Forest Service
and Bureau of Land Management lands is one of the most important,
cost-effective, and timely ways to fight the climate crisis.

But mature forests on federal lands are
threatened by on-going logging. When these mature trees are cut
down and processed, much of their stored carbon is rapidly
released — and recapturing it through forest regrowth takes
decades or even centuries. But climate change is upon us now — we
don't have time to regrow forests.

Last year, President Biden thankfully issued an executive order
recognizing the importance of mature and old-growth forests in
the fight against climate change. It was a welcome move, and
urgent follow-up action is needed to ensure these
climate-critical forests are meaningfully protected from logging.

Tell the Biden administration to realize the promise of their
executive order by creating durable regulatory protections for
mature forests on federal lands. ( [link removed] )

CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Tell President Biden: Remove toxic lead
water pipes quickly and equitably!

There is no safe level of lead exposure.
But millions of old lead pipes contaminate drinking water in
homes in every state across the country, causing a lead
contamination crisis that is putting the health of our children
at risk.

We need the Biden administration to quickly move to replace lead
service lines in a fair and equitable manner. But right now, the
EPA is instead allowing state water utilities 30 years or more to
get lead pipes out even as more people continue to suffer from
contaminated drinking water.

Additionally, under the current plans the
states that have the most lead service lines will get
significantly less funding than other places that have fewer
service lines. It should not be this way.

Sign our petition to the White House urging the Biden
administration to remove lead service lines as quickly and as
equitably as possible. ( [link removed] )

PARTNER UPDATES

Television and film have a history of
shaping culture, which is exactly why more nuanced climate shows
and movies are a good thing. Extrapolations is a new bracing
drama from creator Scott Z. Burns that introduces a near future
where the chaotic effects of climate change have become embedded
into our everyday lives. Burns, along with executive producer
Dorothy Fortenberry, tells eight interwoven stories about love,
work, faith, and family that explore the intimate, life-altering
choices that must be made when the planet is changing faster than
the population. You can stream Extrapolations now on Apple TV+.

Dive deeper into the themes presented in the show and learn more
about the ways you can be part of the climate solutions on the
series microsite here. ( [link removed] )

BIG WINS

* Biden Administration Issues Visionary
Conservation Measures: The Biden administration has announced the
first Ocean Climate Action Plan, which includes a host of
initiatives relating to responsible offshore wind, marine
protected areas to enhance biodiversity, and enhancing fisheries
and coastal resilience. This bold, inclusive plan will set us on
the right path to fight climate and nature crises. Read more > ( [link removed] )

* Saving Lives by Delivering Safe Streets for All: The U.S.
Department of Transportation provided funding for over 500 Safe
Streets for All projects this month, with $800 million to be used
on projects in almost every state in the country. With pedestrian
deaths higher than they have been in decades, it is imperative
that change is made on our nation's roads. Read more > ( [link removed] )

ACTION ROUNDUP

* Tell Bureau of Ocean Energy
Management (BOEM) to Stop Selling Off Our Oceans ( [link removed] ): Alaska can't afford new oil development. Oil development in
the Cook Inlet watershed isn't just dangerous, it is reckless and
unnecessary — and threatens protected wildlife and the
communities that call Cook Inlet home. BOEM must use its
authority to reject "business as usual" oil leasing and stop
auctioning off our oceans before it's too late. Take action > ( [link removed] )

* Tell Congress that Forest Biomass is NOT Clean Energy ( [link removed] ): The forest biomass industry is built on disinformation. It's
just another name for cutting down and burning trees — and being
a huge contributor of climate-wrecking carbon pollution — while
seriously harming communities of color across the United States.
Submit your comment > ( [link removed] )

* Tell President Biden to reverse course and stop the Willow
Project ( [link removed] ): The Biden Administration has approved a massive new illegal
oil drilling project in Alaska's Western Arctic that would
generate an astounding 277 million metric tons of climate-busting
carbon pollution. There's still time to stop it, tell the Biden
Administration you are outraged by this short-sighted decision.
