John, exciting news from Peru: our dear friend and 2019 Tammy Baldwin Breakthrough Award winner Alberto de Belaunde is about to be reelected to the Peruvian Congress! And not just by a little: he received the second-highest number of votes of any Congressional candidate in Lima.
This is a ringing endorsement of Alberto’s anti-corruption and pro-equality agenda. But Alberto is one of just two openly LGBTI Congressmen in Peru. We’re making plans to host a candidate training for a new slate of Peruvian LGBTI candidates. Will you contribute $20 or more to our international program so we can train and elect more LGBTI leaders like Alberto? [[link removed]]

Thanks to Alberto’s leadership, Peru is close to passing legislation legalizing marriage equality and recently outlawed discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Alberto is an outspoken advocate for these reforms and will continue to push for greater equality. We know he’ll continue to work for all Peruvians and prioritize the LGBTI community.
Alberto and the new Congress have a lot of work ahead of them. They’ll need to focus on building coalitions, rebuilding faith in government and updating outdated laws that foster corruption. But we’re going to train a new group of LGBTI leaders who will be ready to run and win in 2021. Can you chip in $20 or more today to support our essential international work? [[link removed]]
