ACTION ALERT:
Michigan Senate Passed Bill to Require Employers to Pay for Elective Abortions
In just one day the Senate fast-tracked Senate Bill 147 through committee and passage on the Senate floor. This bill will require employers to provide insurance coverage for elective abortions as part of their employee benefit plans, violating constitutionally protected rights of conscience for individuals, employers and faith-based institutions.
The bill would apply to all employers in the state with one or more employees who do not have self-insured ERISA plans. Under Roe, abortions were only covered when medically necessary to save the life of the mother. This bill would break that precedent. Additionally, if an employer is providing benefits for pregnancy and childbirth, this would also mandate insurance coverage or paid medical leave for elective abortions. Click here to read more.
This is another example of how Proposal 3 is being used to go far beyond what was permissible under Roe. Let your objections be known! Your state representatives should oppose this legislation—there is time to let them know over spring break! Just send an email expressing your opposition to this over-reach of government and its clear violation of employer’s religious conscience.
