John – If you want to understand the power of the fair maps movement, just look at headlines like this:
Extreme gerrymandering helped the GOP hold a vice grip on power in Michigan for nearly four decades, enabling Republicans to implement their anti-worker agenda while blocking progress on priorities like gun safety.
But those days are over now – and the fair maps movement helped make it happen!
FIRST, in 2018, our affiliate supported the creation of Michigan’s independent redistricting commission to make map drawing fair and nonpartisan.
THEN, in 2021, the commission approved fair maps across the board. The New York Times called Michigan’s congressional map “one of the fairest” maps in the country.
SO, in 2022, when the NDR PAC and our affiliate supported Democracy Defenders running across Michigan, these candidates competed on a level playing field. And – thanks to your grassroots support – many of them won.
NOW, we’re continuing our work to elect leaders who will secure fair maps, protect voting rights, and defend democracy in more states across the country. Will you pitch in to help nationwide? |
Thanks to the grassroots fight for fair maps, democracy is working in Michigan. But we must not forget what Attorney General Eric Holder said: “Now is not the time to take our democracy for granted.”
