“We face many risks every day, especially myself who manages the security and fleet team. But as I have always said, we are Zanmi Lasante. We are warriors. And we will not let the poor die because they cannot access medicine or other resources.”

That’s what our logistics manager in Haiti, Fabrus Guillaume, said late last week when asked about working during a stretch of spiraling nationwide gang violence. Many on our team have described current conditions as the worst they’ve seen in our 40 years of health care.

Fabrus’ team are experts at getting lifesaving tools, medicines, and supplies where they need to go across Haiti’s rural Artibonite and Central Plateau regions. They manage a fleet of vehicles, from ambulances and cargo trucks to off-road motorbikes and staff transport vans.  

But these days, these vehicles are all at daily risk of interception by gangs looking for valuable supplies and people to kidnap for ransom.

He and his team work tirelessly to plot alternate routes to keep things like gloves, medicine, and fuel arriving at rural clinics—sometimes even using mules to avoid roads altogether. So far, health care continues.
