Hi John,

It's been an eventful week, so I wanted to quickly check in before we break for the weekend.

Yesterday, we got the news that former President Donald Trump has been indicted for criminal offenses -- the first-ever indictment of a former American president.

This is a sobering moment in American history to say the least, and as the next steps unfold, let us neither celebrate nor further divide. Like any American, Trump deserves every protection provided by the Constitution and due process under the law. That said, no one is above the law -- not even a former president.

It's been disappointing to see Republicans -- including Speaker Kevin McCarthy -- rush to judgment before the proceedings begin. Trump and his allies are also using this opportunity to rally their base against the justice system.

Republicans are playing a dangerous game headed into 2024, and it's another reminder of why Democrats must retake the majority next year. But we can only do that if we defend incumbents in competitive districts like mine in CA-49.
