Dear John,
Recent News
Spring has sprung here in D.C., and with Spring comes Appropriations season! Here in D.C., we have been busy ensuring that we have a balanced and well-funded budget for 2024. Alongside Appropriations, we have met with many great organizations and constituents. I had the opportunity to meet with Arlington, Mansfield, Grand Prairie, and Dallas City Councils. It was great to get updates from these great cities and talk about their priorities. I am also excited to announce that Speaker McCarthy has appointed me to the Visitor’s Board of the United States Naval Academy! This is a great honor, and I am humbled to serve my great alma mater.
As we move into April, I want to wish everyone a very blessed Easter!
To celebrate on April 6 our office will participate in the downtown Corsicana Easter Hop. I have really enjoyed participating in the community activities in downtown Corsicana where my office sits. It is such a pleasure meeting the families in the district. Our communities all have so many events to offer – be sure to look and see what events are happening in your neighborhood.
D.C. Update
This month we have some great opportunities to pass impactful legislation that I am proud to support.
H. R. 1- Lower Energy Costs Act
-Directly addresses our country’s energy crisis by putting us on a path back towards energy independence, and in turn, reducing inflationary pressures and lowering costs for families.
H.R. 1226 - Wounded Warrior Access Act
-Requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to establish a secure website or online tool through which veterans can submit a request for a copy of their VA claims file (C-file). The bill also requires the VA to provide confirmation of request receipt within 10 days, and the requested C-file in a form (i.e., printed form or downloadable file) of the requester’s choosing within 120 days.
H.R. 753 - VA COST SAVINGS Enhancements Act
-Directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to install and operate on-site regulated medical waste treatment systems at certain VA facilities. The qualifying VA facilities would be those that, after analysis, benefit from the cost savings associated with an on-site medical waste treatment system versus off-site under contract. -No additional funds are authorized to be appropriated to carry out the requirements of this act. Funds must come from amounts otherwise authorized to be appropriated.
I have also been able to Cosponsor some great legislation with my fellow Texas Delegation Members:
-H.Res 165, Commemorating the bicentennial of the Texas Ranger Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety, the oldest State law enforcement agency in North America, and honoring the men and women, past and present, of the Texas Rangers. (lead sponsor, Pete Sessions of TX).
-H.R. 1286, To reimburse the State of Texas for the costs of Operation Lone Star, and for other purposes. (lead sponsor, Pat Fallon of TX).
-H.R.1218, To require the Secretary of the Air Force to provide training to members of the air force of Israel on the operation of KC-46 aircraft, and for other purposes. (lead sponsor, August Pfluger of TX).
Upcoming Events
I am excited to spend some more time in the District this April and the start of May! Here are some of our upcoming events!
April 1st : North Texas Military Academy Day
Congressional offices of North Texas have joined together to co-host The North Texas Military Academy Day on April 1st, 2023. If you are a highly motivated, well-rounded, successful student, consider the unique opportunity to develop physically, ethically, and intellectually while building a foundation for an exciting, challenging, and rewarding career as a military officer in the service of our nation. This event is free and open to the public. It is a great opportunity for students interested in applying for a service academy to gather information and ask questions to representatives from each service academy and congressional staff. One of the application requirements of all the United States service academies (except for the United States Coast Guard Academy) is nomination by a government official. The nominating official is usually a Member of Congress. The North Texas U.S. Service Academy Forum invites high school and middle school students and their families to attend.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., program from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the Fort Worth ISD Teaching & Learning Center, 1050 Bridgewood Drive, Fort Worth, TX 76112.
