Raising Awareness on the Hill About Misdiagnosis of Heart Disease in Women
On March 1, WomenHeart partnered with Women’s Heart Alliance to host a virtual briefing for policymakers ([link removed] on misdiagnosis of heart disease in women. Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) welcomed participants and spoke about the need to educate clinicians about heart disease in women. In a panel moderated by WomenHeart CEO Celina Gorre, speakers, including Dr. Noel Bairey Merz of Cedars Sinai, Dr. Nakela Cook from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and WomenHeart Champion Charity Watkins, spoke about how bias and the differences in heart disease between men and women are among the factors that contribute to missed and delayed diagnosis. WomenHeart thanks our partners who fund our Advocacy Corps efforts like these, including Amgen, Novartis, Bristol-Meyers Squibb and the BMS-Pfizer Alliance.

WomenHeart Hosts Virtual Science & Leadership Symposium
WomenHeart is hosting a virtual Science & Leadership Symposium this spring. It kicks off Monday, April 3, and we are thrilled to soon be welcoming a new class of trained WomenHeart Champions. This Symposium includes the same content and faculty as offered during the in-person training, which will continue to take place at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota in the fall. This spring training allows for expanded reach and for women with heart disease who are otherwise unable to travel to participate.
Putting Patients First (Always)
WomenHeart CEO Celina Gorre returned home energized and inspired after participating in The Patient Experience hosted by one of our partners, Edwards Lifesciences. Over 5,000 company employees cheered on the participating patients by name, each with stories to share about their heart valves. The picture only captures those who got there early to get a good seat; thousands more stood outside in the cold rain, continuing the feel-good tunnel all the way to breakfast. The two-day event also included tours of the sewing and testing of heart valves and patient listening sessions about their experience of heart valve disease and their procedures. “It was hard not to feel overwhelmed, in the best way possible,” said Celina as she reflected on the event.
New Blog: A Journey with Artificial Sweeteners
After a new study recently showed that consuming erythritol, a common sugar alcohol (Stevia), was associated in an increase in adverse cardiac events, WomenHeart Champion Dr. Sherri Hansen reflected on her journey to find a safe sugar substitute. Her blog ([link removed] for WomenHeart shares helpful information and insight about what it takes for women with heart disease to figure out and maintain a healthy diet. Visit Our Website
